Good morning! It’s Monday, September 8th.
International Literacy Day.
This one goes out to all my nerds.
And now, the news.
Texas Shooting
-via ABC News
We start how we start here in America. Again and again and again.
With five people injured, one person dead, and a manhunt underway just outside of Houston, Texas, after a man opened fire on people eating on a restaurant patio around 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
At the time of this recording, investigators were still working to identify the suspect. Witnesses told officials that, before the shooting, he was sitting there quietly, just having a drink at the bar before firing at least 20 shots.
A motive is still being determined.
Trump v Chicago
And in Chicago – despite threatening that National Guard troops would be sent into the city this past Friday, the same day the city would also see a significant rise in ICE raids… that does not appear to have been the case this weekend.
It doesn’t mean things didn’t happen. It just means those two things didn’t happen.
But other stuff happened.
On Trump’s side – he posted a meme (he is so lame!) of an AI generated image of himself in an Apocalypse Now poster (he also has some serious body image issue. We all need to love our bodies more.) and in the image he’s got a hat and aviators on, watching military helicopters over the city of Chicago, which is very clearly war-torn with fire and smoke all over. And then he’s written, “I love the smell of deportations in the morning” and “Chicago is about to find out why it's called the Department of War.”
That’s the president of the United States threatening the third-largest city in the country. Declaring war against them, basically.
Show me how it isn’t.
Or, okay fine – where is the joke? What is the joke? Explain it to me like I’m five.
The text on the photo says “Chipocalypse Now” which is even more lame.
So that’s what the president did.
Chicago… stood ten toes down. Said we are not afraid of you. Of you?? Last weekend half the country thought you’d died and, and this is real, the song No One Mourns the Weekend was trending. There are 47 playlists on Spotify that are called a variation of “When It Happens.”
Chicago is not afraid of Trump.
They pulled their salt trucks out to block city parks from ICE officials. They’re already planning to sue the administration.
No one is illegal on stolen land.
And when the president of the United States is a felon, he doesn’t get to say boo about people who are basically forced into a misdemeanor because our immigration laws are incredibly complicated.
And if ya really think you can just go into Chicago and do hostile government takeover? Just like you clearly didn’t google Los Angeles and the way were not the ones – Chicago is not the one either.
My suggestion would be to stop doing hostile government takeover.
Factory Immigration Raid
-via NY Times
Nearly 500 workers at a Hyundai plant in Savannah, Georgia, were detained on Thursday in what’s being called the “largest single-site enforcement operation” in Homeland Security Investigations’ history.
Out of those 475 workers, more than 300 are Korean nationals.
Those folks were then taken to an immigration detention center near the Florida state line. No one has been charged with a crime yet but South Korea will take all of them home and push to improve their visa systems, since most of the people who are sent back were there on expired visas.
They. Were. Working.
Not going to be able to see the benefits of the social programs their taxes are paying into, but still – they were working. They were paying into those programs. Building our economy. Helping to keep manufacturing jobs here in the country.
But okie doke. Keep talking about how you’re only going to deport the most dangerous criminals. The worst of the worst.
Meanwhile, a literal sexual assaulter is the president, and they’re deporting 475 people working at a Hyundai plant in Savannah, Georgia.
Russia Strikes Ukraine
-via CNN
In its largest aerial strike of the war, Russia launched 810 drones, four ballistic missiles, and nine cruise missiles Sunday night into Monday morning, striking a Kyiv government building for the first time.
At least two people were killed – one of them was an infant. President Zelenskyy says four people were killed and 44 were injured.
This comes on the heels of Trump’s visit with Putin in Alaska last month, where he left with no deal (I’m starting to think he’s not much of a deal artist). On Sunday, Trump was asked if he was ready to move to phase two of his Russian sanctions and he said yes. TBD on what that is.
He’s a big brave boy! But he also loves Putin so much so, could be anything.
US Open
-via NBC News and The Guardian
And finally – Trump went to the US Open on Sunday, which is not news really but I do want to note, per multiple witnesses, he was booed very loudly. However, a letter from the United States Tennis Association asked broadcasters not to show any dissent against Trump. “Refrain from showcasing any disruptions or reactions.”
This is not normal for them – this is the first time they’ve done this.
Masked dissent for the least liked president in history.
Could never be me.
Also… this leaked, so we know but like – were we going to believe it? Was anyone at home watching the US Open thinking huh, if tennis fans like him, maybe I’ll give him another shot?
Dumb. It’s all dumb.
And that’s it. That’s the news.
I’m proud of… oh! It’s football season and I don’t know if you know this but I’m a football fan now. Super into it. Downs. Yardage. Two-point conversations.
Got em all.
I’m proud of the Lions.
Also books. Nerds at-large, really. We love a nerd.
But more than books – because I’d put every good word ever invented into the world’s longest book and it still wouldn’t be enough to describe all of your best stuff… I’m proud of you.
