07/29/25

Good morning! It’s Tuesday, July 29th.

National Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day which is a day to… buy cheese and then sacrifice it by putting it in a mouse trap and you know what? We just shouldn’t be using mouse traps. It seems very inhuman. Also, what if that mouse is lactose intolerant?

Also, that’s a waste of cheese!

Just buy cheese to eat it.

I’ll tell ya something, the world is lucky my big ol brain is here to have such good solutions.

And now, the news.

Reno Shooting

-via CNN

We start how we start here in America, with at least three people dead and multiple others injured after a gunman opened fire early Monday morning at the Grand Sierra Resort casino in Reno, Nevada.

The suspect is alive but was injured and taken to the hospital. As of this recording, a motive is not yet known. He was seen pacing the parking lot for about 45 minutes before he went inside and starting shooting.

Once inside, he started shooting before having to pause briefly when his gun jammed. Once he cleared the jam, he continued shooting.

Early numbers suggested two people died, but there was confusion and prior to a three PM press conference, all the Reno police spokesperson would say was that the numbers were inaccurate and that they would be clarified at the press conference.

Trump Parts with Netanyahu

-via ABC News, Virginia.edu, and Cleveland Clinic

And in Israel, Trump has sort of (lightly) broken with Trump and, when asked if he believes Prime Minister Netanyahu’s claim that there is no starvation happening in Gaza he said… “I don’t know.”

Can’t say. Who knows, really.

"I don't know. I mean, based on television, I would say not particularly, because those children look very hungry, but we're giving a lot of money and a lot of food, and other nations are now stepping up."

The Israeli military is killing people as they are going to get food. Since the war began, 147 people, including 88 children, have died of starvation.

Based on television, those children look hungry.

They don’t look hungry. They are past hungry.

I want to explain what’s happening, scientifically, here. And brace yourself – it’s a bummer.

Hunger is a physical sensation.

Starving, actual starvation, is clinical malnutrition. Your body is so deprived of calories that it starts to break down fat and muscle for energy.

Eventually, it also starts to break down vital tissue, like heart muscle. Your electrolyte levels drop, and then your organs fail.

Obviously, when someone is starving the first thought is – feed them. The problem is, that can also be deadly, leading to something called refeeding syndrome. All of the sudden, the body is seeing a surge in insulin and it pushes nutrients into cells really fast, causing electrolytes to crash.

And then, similar to when they were starving – when those electrolytes drop, that can be deadly. But with refeeding syndrome, the speed at which it happens is particularly dangerous.

The reason we know so much about it is because places like the Cleveland Clinic have studied it. They also know the best way to prevent it from happening, because the best way to combat this is to start taking in calories again under medical care.

Which can’t happen while the government is Israel is still bombing all of the clinics and refusing actual medical aid in.

So while every other news outlet thinks Trump saying “I don’t know” if people are starving in Gaza when the proof is literally in numbers and photographic evidence is some great break with Netanyahu – he also thinks the solution is just to throw a bunch of food into Gaza, which is just as deadly. Something he would know, if he was, in any way shape or form, a curious person.

But we elected a deeply uncurious man who chooses to be uninterested in all of this so – at least we can better understand what’s happening with the food crisis.

Russian Ceasefire Deadline

-via The Independent and The Times

Meanwhile, speaking from a golf course where he got caught cheating at golf (literally, there’s a video of his caddy dropping a replacement golf ball in the short grass instead of the rough), Trump said he’s “very disappointed” in Russia’s Vladimir Putin and is cutting Russia’s 50-day ceasefire deal deadline down to between 10 and 12 days, and that could announced anytime.

I was going to put a quote in from what he said but it’s too long. He just uses too many words. And that’s mesaying that!

And what it is, is a bunch of words to basically say that Vladimir Putin tricked him into thinking he was a good guy or could be trusted. And do you understand how absolutely big dumb you have to be to trust Vladimir Putin? And he willingly says that it happened a few different times.

He’s like Charlie Brown and the football.

So he says the ceasefire deal will be shortened, who knows. Because unlike that absolute dunce, I’m at least smart enough to know not to trust someone that lies over and over again.

Maxwell Goes to SCOTUS

-via AP News and CNN

Meanwhile, (this is a Trump heavy news cycle, sorry. But don’t worry, we’re ending on an up!) – meanwhile, Ghislaine Maxwell asked the Supreme Court, I can’t even believe this… asked the Supreme Court to overturn her conviction!

Not because she’s innocent, but because she and Epstein got a sweetheart deal and, “This case is about what the government promised, not what Epstein did.”

She believes she is covered under the non-prosecution agreement that Epstein got if he plead guilty (which is wild that he got!), but a court of appeals said no no babe – that was done in Florida (but of course) and does not bind New York lawyers to the backwards decision of the deal in Florida.

If you’re confused as to how he was in jail even though there was a non-prosecution agreement – that was on the state charges. The federal charges got him in prison.

That deal, by the way, was approved by Alexander Acosta – who Trump later made Labor Secretary. But don’t worry, I’m certain that’s just a coincidence and not a thank you because on Monday Trump clarified that he stopped being friends with Epstein long before he was arrested.

Now, previously he said he stopped being friends with him because he was a creep. Makes sense – that’s literally the most mild way to describe it but sure, okay, yes he was technically a creep.

But on Monday, he said it was because “He stole people that worked for me.”

Really? You didn’t want to continue leaning into the dude’s a creep angle?

I mean, I’m not here to help but that one seems pretty easy.

Medicaid Must Fund Planned Parenthood

-via Reuters

And finally, as promised – we’re ending on an up!

On Monday, a Federal judge blocked Trump’s Big Dumb Bill from defunding Planned Parenthood for one year. A move that would have cost $100 million dollars. They were willing to PAY $100 million, to defund Planned Parenthood. And I don’t know if you know this, but I did the math on this, and it would have led to about 3,440 additional deaths, just in that one year. Deaths they were fine with. $100 million they were happy to add to the deficit.

All so they could try and tell people that they are the pro-life party.

Incredible.

However, this has now been blocked because the language of the law makes it clear that, although the bill was only supposed to defund certain organizations if they provide abortions, the language and structure very clearly was built to affect every member of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, whether they were named or not.

That then turned it into something called a “bill of attainder,” which is an act of Congress that wrongly seeks to inflict punishment without a trial. Which is a brilliant ruling! Cause that’s a tricky one to untie!

Additionally, the judge said the law also violated Planned Parenthood members' equal protection rights under the Fifth Amendment. Now, inside of the short little 5th Amendment is something called the Due Process Clause, which says no one shall be "deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law" by the federal government. For decades, that clause was interpreted to include a right to privacy, including a right to an abortion. But of course, the Supreme Court overruled the right to bodily autonomy and so the Supreme Court does not currently view the Due Process Clause as something that would protect the right to abortion. But that’s not what the judge said here. Instead, the judge said it just violated members equal protection rights under the 5th.

Abortion was saved for the First Amendment, but not in the way you’d expect, because the judge ruled the law burdened the right of members who do not provide abortions to associate with their parent organization in likely violation of the First Amendment.

See? This is why we need good judges!

And that’s it. That’s the news.

I told you we were ending on an up!

I’m proud of that judge!

Also cheese. And mice – but like, not enough to want them to come into my home.

But more than all of that combined, because you’re welcome here anytime – I’m proud of you.
