Title
Sorry That Day Isn’t All About You
Good morning! It’s Monday, September 14th
Eat a Hoagie Day
Which naturally made me wonder… why are they called hoagies? So, they’re called a lot of different things in a lot of different places. But it’s Philly that calls them Hoagies.
And no one knows for sure why, the actual truth is lost to history, but the mostly likely reason is that a Jazz musician turned sandwich shop over named Al De Palma saw some people eating a big ol sandwich and said “you’d have to be a hog to eat all of that.” He then opened a sandwich shop during the Great Depression and started selling those big ol sandwiches, calling them “hoggies.”
How did “hoggie” get to “hoagie”?
Have you met a Philadelphian?
Other names around the country including – sub (short for submarine, because they look like submarines).
Grinder – this is the New England version and it’s thought to be a nod to the dockworkers in the area. Grinder is Italian-American slang for dockworkers.
Hero – In a food column in 1936, a reviewer said you’d have to be a hero to eat it.
Po’ Boys – During the streetcar strike of 1929, two brothers promised free meals to the striking workers for as long as the strike continued. Every time one of the workers came in, they’d say “here comes one of those poor boys”
And of course, you’ve got spuckies, garibaldis, blimpies, torpedos, zeppelins, bombers, and wedges. All of which just makes me want one.
And now, the news.
Indonesian passenger ship overturns
-via CNN
Starting in Indonesia, where a passenger ferry carrying 243 people sank on Sunday. A combination of rough seas and waves as high as 10” is being blamed for the sinking.
As of this recording, mid-day on Sunday, 107 people have been rescued alive, while 6 bodies were also pulled from the water.
It’s worth noting that, unfortunately, this is common in the area, because of the weather and weak safety standards.
Last month, there was a fire on a ferry near Bali, two weeks before that there was one near Java, and just four days ago a fire on a ferry near the Philippines, at least 76 people died.
As I record this, the search continues for 130 people.
Update: Israel and Gaza
-via The Guardian and Reuters
Staying international, but moving away from accidents…
In Gaza, at least ten people were killed and 56 others were injured in a span of 48 hours worth of attacks by Israeli forces. This includes a woman who was eight months pregnant.
These were not drone strikes, but close-range attacks by those forces.
This latest barrage of attacks from Israeli forces comes just a few days after the government of Israel gave Britain 30 days to close its consulate in East Jerusalem, in response to sanctions that Britain placed on Israel, which was done to "stand against injustice" in the West Bank.
France and Canada joined Britain in their sanctions (shocking that America didn’t. Can’t imagine why), but no action has been taken against those two countries.
Update: Ukraine and Russia
And moving to the latest on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine…
On Sunday, Trump told Ukraine to stop attacking Russian oil refineries, saying it’s causing a shortage and if someone’s not careful, the price of gas is going to go up!
Yeah, knock it off Ukraine! We’re going to offer limited, and fully inconsistent, support as you fight off an invasion of a country that’s literally kidnapping kids and training them to become soldiers against their own country while also asking you to stop defending yourself because the thing that seems to be working is causing gas prices to go up and for sure that’s the only thing causing gas prices to go up. It absolutely has nothing to do with the fact that Trump’s illegal, and not even allowed to be called a war, war against Iran caused the Strait of Hormuz to be shut down, driving oil prices up, all to distract from the fact that Trump was best friends with a pedophile and won’t let anyone investigate that pedophile or his relationship with him.
Life is just full of wild coincidences, ya know?
Meanwhile, former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is FINE thanks for asking, after a passenger train behind him was attacked by a Russian drone as he was traveling from Ukraine to Poland, where he was attending a security conference in Kyiv.
Two issues… the attack took place less than a mile and a half from the Polish border. Poland is a NATO country, so that’s not great. Not great that they’re doing attacks so close to a NATO country.
Also not great? Was this meant to be a warning, or did they just not know what train Johnson was on?
The train that was hit had 206 confirmed passengers and, so far, no known casualties.
Stabbing in Louisiana
-via The Guardian
A person of interest has been arrested after four people were killed, and another was injured, in a mass stabbing attack in Louisiana.
The person who was arrested was a suspect in a 2019 stabbing in the same area. He was acquitted of that stabbing. In early 2019, he was accused, but it’s unclear whether he was charged, in the murder of an unhoused man in the same area.
The only survivor of this series of stabbings is in and out of consciousness right now so, hopefully they survive and can confirm whether the person arrested is, in fact, the correct suspect. Because he sounds like a BAD dude, so the sooner we can get him off the streets, the better.
Election Stuff
-via Axios, NBC News, NY Times, and Newsweek
And finally… talk elections to me, baybee.
First of all, just off the bat but this isn’t even what the story is about I just want to update you… no. The Post Office is still not allowed to help Trump steal the midterms. We’re all fine! We’re doing great!
Okay, let’s get into it.
Hey – would you like $5,000? What if I told you that you could have it, for the low low price of… your democracy, rights, and everything you love?
Well that’s what Trump’s promising… if Republicans win the midterms, we all get $5k! Put that with all the other checks he’s said he’s sending and you’ll get… $0!
Dude is so scared about the midterms that he’s turned to bribery. Stage 3 of the stages of grief.
You’re close buddy! (jk – he’ll never get to acceptance.)
And we’ll never get those checks. They have to be approved by Congress (which they won’t be, because we’re about to take Congress back). But even if we don’t win Congress, and Speaker Mikey J is still running the House, here’s what he had to say about it:
"I commit that Congress will work through it and find consensus on that like they have to do everything else."
He’s such a little baby that that’s the closest he can get to a no.
This ain’t gonna happen!
So what do you want to do? Do you want to just let him run his mouth, or do you want to vote and push back with an overwhelming win for the Dems?
This whole thing turns on turnout.
We’re talking about a party run by a man who, last week, said that he was carried out, literally, “they literally lifted me up,” because he was in the US Steel Building “right after” the attacks of 9/11 and the firefighters thought the building was coming down, sort of making it seem like he was there on 9/11.
But he wasn’t. He went to Ground Zero a few days after (although later he said he was there the following day, clearing rubble).
For a man who has spent so much time in the public eye, I find it VERY interesting that there is no photographic evidence of that. He also never told that story about the US Steel Building until he was running for president in 2016.
On September 12th, 2001, the director of communications from New York City’s Department of Buildings said this about the US Steel Building: ''It is not and was not in danger of collapse. The building is structurally sound.''
He said he saw people in Jersey City cheering when the towers feel – that never happened. Police confirmed that never happened.
What we do know, for sure, is that, the day after the attacks, when we was supposedly clearing the rubble and in a building that was creaking but had been confirmed as structurally sound, is that he called into a local news station and said the following about his building: “40 Wall Street actually was the second-tallest building in downtown Manhattan. And it was, actually before the World Trade Center, was the tallest. And then when they built the World Trade Center, it became known as the second-tallest. And now it's the tallest.”
And we know for sure that, on the 25th anniversary, he was photographed asleep, fully asleep, during the Pentagon’s commemoration. Why was he there? Because they wouldn’t let him speak at the one in New York.
Why? Because no one is allowed to! No political speeches or remarks by dignitaries are allowed because they want to keep it nonpartisan. Instead, relatives of the victims read the names.
Sorry that this national tragedy, the deadliest attack this country has ever seen, claiming a total of more than 13,000 people (2,977 as a direct result and more than 9,000 in 9/11-related illnesses because, while Trump was bragging about his building now being the tallest in the city, actual heroes were there, in the toxic air, trying to save lives and killing themselves in the process and now need medical help that you and your absolute monsters in Congress, have removed)… sorry that day isn’t all about you, you freaking buffoon.
Now, are you REALLY going to let this guy get away with everything he’s done? Everything he’s stolen, or cheated, or broken?
Or are you going to vote?
This whole thing turns on turnout.
And that’s it. That’s the news.
I’m proud of first responders.
Also… oh my god… also hoagies.
Both. NOT EQUALLY. Just like… also. ALSO hoagies.
But more than a hoagie, because not unlike a hoagie, you can go by a million names, but unlike a hoagie, I can never get enough… I’m proud of you.
