Eff the Beat, I’ll Go Acapella Baybee

Good morning! It’s Wednesday, September 16th.

Mexican Independence Day

Hey Kim, isn’t that Cinco De Mayo?

That’s embarrassing for you. NO!

Mexican Independence Day marked the start of Mexico’s 11-year war for freedom from Spain. It started on this day in 1810 (I was just barely in kindergarten then)

And it started with a speech that included this:

“My friends and countrymen: neither the king nor tributes exist for us any longer. We have borne this shameful tax, which only suits slaves, for three centuries as a sign of tyranny and servitude; [a] terrible stain which we shall know how to wash away with our efforts. The moment of our freedom has arrived, the hour of our liberty has struck; and if you recognized its great value, you will help me defend it from the ambitious grasp of the tyrants. Only a few hours remain before you see me at the head of the men who take pride in being free. I invite you to fulfill this obligation. And so without a patria nor liberty we shall always be at a great distance from true happiness. It has been imperative to take this step as now you know, and to begin this has been necessary. The cause is holy and God will protect it. My Children: A new dispensation [order of things] comes to us today. Will you receive it? Will you free yourselves? Will you recover the land stolen 300 years ago from your forefathers?... We must act at once… Will you not defend your religion and your rights as true patriots? Long live our Lady of Guadalupe! Death to bad government! Death to the Peninsulares!

Long live religion!

Long live the Americas and death to the corrupt government!

Mexicanos, Viva México!"

Not sure why that speech has remained so relevant, or why I felt compelled to read all of it now. We’ll never know I guess.

And now, the news.

Trump Can’t Steal the Election

-via Washington Post

It could be a little bit because I’m recording this on National Voter Registration Day and I’m feeling a WAY, or because when I decided to start this episode with this story Billie Eilish’s The Greatest was playing, but either way…

Eff the beat, I’ll go acapella baybee

In yesterday’s episode, I mentioned that news broke, literally as I was recording, that the Supremes had dropped the hammer on Trump’s “but but but I wanna” case to disenfranchise your vote.

It happened so quickly, I could only note it as a quick little aside. And, because it was a voting story, a lot you were probably very happy about that.

Well, I have the worst possible news…

And that’s it. That’s the news.
