Good morning! It’s Wednesday, June 11th.
National Making Like Beautiful Day
How’s that going for you? Good?
Great! Good luck!
And now, the news.
Update: Los Angeles
Starting with things here in Los Angeles.
They continue to be the very classic weird Los Angeles mix of super weird and super normal. Went to work – very normal.
Still in a police state – super weird.
Here’s what happened on Tuesday.
That National Guard is still here. Now they’re protecting ICE agents as they continue to make arrests. Which I guess makes sense when you consider there’s not much else for them to do because outside of a few agitators here and there, the protests have been peaceful during the day. People are playing music and hanging out! Just casually asking the government not to kidnap our neighbors over a civil violation.
But this change does move the Guard closer engaging in law enforcement activities which, right now, they are not allowed to do.
Early on Tuesday, the state’s AG after a judge for a temporary restraining order to "prevent the use of federalized National Guard and active duty Marines for law enforcement purposes on the streets of a civilian city." The asked noted that the troops will only add to the tensions here in the city and promote unrest.
To which Trump said: yeah man. That’s what I’m looking for. I literally do not care about this country! I came here to throw ketchup plates at walls and promote unrest within the country but guess what – I’m all outta ketchup plates!
The hearing is set for tomorrow.
The Marines arrived in Los Angeles in the late afternoon.
Fear not, not only will the presence of the Marines and Federal Guard troops in Los Angeles increase the stress and potential for violence here in the city, it will also cost a ton of money!
A report came out on Tuesday noting that this stunt, and please understand that that’s what this is – it is a stunt that puts this city and ultimately this country in a whole lot of danger – is going to cost at least $134 million. That’s just the cost to deploy them. Your tax dollars at work, my friends.
At a speech at Fort Bragg, Trump called the protestors “animals” and “a foreign enemy.”
Baby, these foreign protests are pure American. America is quite literally a country born of protest!
You have created this. You manufactured this. And he knows it because he wants this. He’s creating this dialogue because he wants to invoke the insurrection act, which he didn’t use when he was doing insurrection and I can’t even talk about that yet because I’m not kidding I am about to crash out and if I think about it too much I truly will combust but like… this country is a protest!
This whole country loved us five months ago for doing what half the country hates us for doing now.
Wild!
Anyway – the mayor has imposed a curfew and I for one think a bedtime is fine.
23 businesses were looted overnight.
New Jersey House Rep Charged
-via CNN
Meanwhile, in Jersey…
On May 9th, a group of protestors, as well as the Newark Mayor and other reps visited a detention center where immigrants who were snatched up by ICE were being held.
By law, members of Congress are allowed to go into federal immigration facilities anytime. Even without notice.
Obviously officers did not want to let the group in. The mayor was arrested (!!!) for trespassing.
Arrested.
For trespassing.
The charge was later dropped but still.
Just before that, in the chaos of it all, including the facility breaking the law by not letting these House reps visit their constituants, one of the House Reps, House Rep McIver is in a tightly packed group that includes officers and, at that point, her right elbow pushed into an officer.
It’s unclear if it was an accident or not. It was chaos. It’s genuinely unclear.
But on Tuesday she was indicted on federal charges of impeding and interfering with immigration officers and… you know what’s coming next…. Two assault charges.
Yep.
Obviously she’s going to fight it.
We have gone round the bend!
Greta Thunberg
-via BBC
After her aid ship was intercepted by Israel, activist Greta Thunberg has been deported back to her home country of Sweden.
Austria Shooting
-via BBC
Ten people are dead in Austria after a 21-year-old gunman shot and killed nine people at his former secondary school, before taking his own life on campus.
It is the deadliest gun attack in the country’s recent history.
Three days of mourning have been declared in the country in addition to a nationwide minute of silence today and palace flags being flown at half mast.
Southern Baptists v Obergefell
-via NY Times
On Tuesday the Southern Baptists voted to call for the Supreme Court to overturn Obergefell, the ruling that has allowed for same-sex marriage for the last decade.
Happy Pride everyone!
Andrew Walker, of Kentucky, of course, said, “what we’re trying to do is keep the conversation alive.”
Someone else said, “We know that we’re in a minority in the culture right now, but we want to be a prophetic minority.”
I… I really am about to crash out.
This is going to be the thing! Care about yourself. Please, I am begging you. Care less about someone else, care about yourself. Someone else’s marriage does not affect you unless that marriage is, you know, a part of your marriage in some way. Otherwise, I believe it was Jesus who said… find a hobby you weirdos and care about yourself.
We want to keep the conversation alive
For what? For why?
This can’t be the thing. This can’t be the thing that brings this on. I refuse to let this be the thing that breaks me. I will not let a man named, Denny Burk who says things about prophetic minority be the thing that sends me over the end.
Because what does that even mean?!
I cannot.
And that’s it. That’s the news.
Listen to this voice. Isn’t this the voice of something that must be done with the news for the night?
I’m not proud of that Denny Burk guy. He sounds like a dork.
But you’re not. And for that… I’m proud of you.
